MEET MIKE DALE - OWNER

Kids Drum Teacher Instructor In Utah

For 25+ years Mike has run a full-time teaching roster which is bursting at the seams. Due to his passion for teaching, which grew from a love of playing, one would be hard-pressed to find another teacher who has taught more Utahns how to play the drums. Mike offers a very welcoming atmosphere for learning and accommodates every level of skill.  Having hired on teaching assistants, Mike owns and operates one of Utah’s largest private teaching programs.

Mike’s interest in drums began when, at the age of 8, he heard the beating of the drums coming from the open window of the neighbor boy. It was at this time that Mike began nagging his parents about drums. He saved every penny and with a lot of begging convinced his parents to cover half the cost of a drum set. He was able to begin lessons and practiced with a joy for playing that would, over time, develop into a passion. He performed at his elementary school talent show in ’86, playing “We Built This City” alongside his bandmates. It was a hit! And, Mike was forever changed. He was hooked and would eventually immerse himself in the world of drumming, never looking back.

During his drumming education he studied under very talented instructors:

  • Don Main of Utah Symphony/University of Utah-adjunct (9 years)
  • Steve Gustaveson of Sun, Shade and Rain and Legendary teacher (5 years)
  • Lane Lundberg of Cold Fire and Fox (2 years)
  • Viset Chansamone of Mind Over Matter (2 years)

His extensive education enabled him to become extremely proficient in many styles of drumming such as Classical Snare, Rudimental Snare, Pop/Rock, Jazz, Funk and Latin. He has also developed a reputation for his mastership in transcribing.

Mike began his private teaching at the Orem Summerhays Music Center. It was during this time that he maintained a busy teaching and performing schedule for several years. In 1999, Mike was appointed to the position of Director for the Crescent School of Music (Orem Campus) and served as the Department Chair of Drum Studies for 2 years.

In the summer of 2001, the torch was passed down to Mike from Steve Gustaveson to carry on the teaching legacy. It was at this time Mike relocated to the Cottonwood Heights area, securing multiple studios in the very building he was once taught. Over the years Mike expanded his reach by adding other locations while maintaining the Cottonwood Heights studio. He now has studios in Sandy (Riverton Music) and Lehi (Gymcats) and teaches a very limited number at his home studio in Sandy, Utah.

With close to 3 decades of teaching experience, Mike has developed a reputation for providing outstanding instruction to all skill levels and ages. He bases his teaching philosophy on building the self-esteem of the student and turning their hobby into a passion. Many of Mike’s students have received scholarships, placed first in competitions, played in touring bands, or become drum teachers themselves.

Mike Dale was born and raised in Sandy, Utah and still lives there today. He is married and has two grown sons. Mike’s other interests are: collecting rare music, anything outdoors and sailing. He also enjoys a good road trip, when time-off allows for it.  In the late 2000’s, Mike began working on his aviation ratings and hopes to become a skilled hobbyist. But his life wouldn’t be complete without gigging, so he recently began working with a new band as of 2024.
